Early Literacy and Books: Making the Connection

Saroj Ghoting, a nationally recognized educator will be offering an online course, Early Literacy and Books: Making the Connection from Monday, September 12, 2011 to Saturday October 8, 2011.

This four-week course is a basic introduction to the early literacy skills as set forth in the American Library Association’s Every Child Ready to Read@your library® initiative.   This course includes research on early literacy, brain development, and relating early literacy skills to books for young children.  This is a good introduction for all staff that interacts with children and their families.

This course is a prerequisite for Early Literacy Enhanced Storytime: Reaching Parents and Caregivers, Too which the Office of Commonwealth Libraries plans to be offer during the winter of 2011-2102.

Each participant must have access to Ages and Stages (rev. ed. 2001) by Karen Miller and Bunny Fun by Sarah Weeks.

In preparation to take this course, you will learn to use Moodle.  Enid Costley from the Library of Virginia will be setting up registrants and providing assignments for the Moodle website. Beginning on August 22, 2011 participants will be able to access and through assignments that week and the following week, August 29th, you will learn to use this site.

Participants not completing the Moodle course will be unable to access the online course Early Literacy and Books: Making the Connection Assignments for the course will be available Mondays on Moodle beginning September 12, 2011 and due the following Friday.  There will be an additional two weeks following the course end on October 8, 2011 to complete all assignments.  All course work is due on Saturday, October 22, 2011.

You will receive 12 Continuing Education (CE) credits for this course.  If you have taken a course in the past from Saroj and can answer the following questions, you don’t need this course.  However, this class IS a prerequisite to the Early Literacy Enhanced Storytime: Reaching Parents and Caregivers, Too because Saroj refers to certain things specifically.

Can you name and explain the six early literacy skills? Can you explain the development of each from newborn to age five and relate it to activities you do around books?

To register go to the Webjunction PA calendar of events for September 12, 2011.  Space is limited and registration closes at 9:00 pm on Monday, August 15, 2011.
