Two weeks ago, ACLA partnered with the AIU to host the 1st annual Allegheny County Children's Choice Awards!
About 175 kids in 4th-6th grade came from schools all over the county to spend the day at the Heinz History Center. In the morning, keynote speaker Joe Wos (cartoonist and storyteller from Pittsburgh's own Toonseum) shared his story in words and pictures about "How Bumblebee Learned to Fly."
The rest of the day was full of stories, from the Hear Me Project, to some of our favorite local storytellers, plus some great skits by the kids which were inspired by their books of choice.
At the end of the day, the moment we'd all been waiting for finally arrived. Out of all the contenders in the running, the winner of the 2011 Children's Choice Awards was announced.
And the winner is...
The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan!
Second place went to Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth by Jeff Kinney.
And Nature Girl by Jane Kelley clinched third!
All in all, it was a great day! And now it's almost time to start preparing for next year's Children's Choice Awards. As you read lots of good books over the next 8 months, try to pick a few titles to nominate for next year's CCA. Also think of some ways that your library might be able to partner with your local schools to enable even MORE kids throughout the county to participate next year!
