This morning on NPR, Lynn Neary reported on the development of picture book apps or interactive ebooks for children (recording here). Her story does a wonderful job of presenting multiple sides of the debate on the merits of ebooks, and even asks New York Public Librarian Elizabeth Bird to share her take on these new, interactive reading tools. After listening to the story, take a moment to read this wonderful article by Bird that was published in the January 2011 edition of the School Library Journal. Within, she provides some really useful guidelines for navigating and evaluating the large body of picture book apps that have flooded the market during the past year. It is sure to be useful as you assist your patrons in selecting the right apps for their young reader.
