Raising Boys Who Read

Every librarian knows that getting boys into the library and their noses into a book is sometimes a bit trickier than getting the gals involved.  We're always looking for more tips and tricks on helping those boys discover the wonder of reading and especially the cool-factor of libraries!  A recent article in the Wall Street Journal revisits some of those definitive strategies (like shoving books at them that celebrate bodily functions!) but more interestingly, the article points to the rise of video games (gasp!) as being part of boys' lowering test scores.  Oh no!  Do not fear, however - as the suggestion is to merely keep them in check (at home, that is)

What was most interesting, is that apparently, there is no literacy gap between boys and girls who are homeschooled.
