Storytime Inspiration

Recently, there have been a few emails on our district list serve from librarians searching for ideas to freshen up the ol' weekly storytime.  It's a great program that nearly all of our libraries offer but how do you keep it fresh and lively and fun and interesting?

There is help!  In addition to tapping the collective brain/wisdom of our county's 45 libraries and 70+ library locations with a ton of cool staff, here are some places online that might tickle your storytime-fancy:
  • Mother Goose on the Loose!  This is a great professional book and CD/ROM that will get the juices flowing.  There is a workshop that comes around every so often where Betsy Diament-Cohen teaches librarians and teachers how to bring stories to life with babies and little ones.  I attended one of them and will never forget how she read I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! by Karen Beaumont.  It was pitch-perfect!
  • Allen County Public Library has a great wiki with tons of ideas.  Here's a link to their preschool story themes which each include an elaborate guide to each theme!
  • Check the E.B. White Read Aloud Awards for titles that sound supremely good read out loud!
  • A great librarian from Queens, NY has collected some of her favorite storytime titles
  • This blog right here has some great ideas:
  • Hennepin County Library has collected a ton of book titles and ideas for storytimes on ELSIE (Early Literacy Storytime Ideas Exchange)
  • Tips on using flannel boards in storytimes
  • EarlyWord book blog just posted the Year's Best Read Alouds.
  • A whole blog dedicated to storytime ideas (try subscribing to it in your RSS reader and new ideas will come to you automatically!)
  • Lastly, check the ACLA Youth Services Wiki for even more ideas and docs with song and fingerplay suggestions!
