Fortune magazine's most recent issue highlights something that we as librarians have been anxious about for the past few years since the advent of the e-book. "The Future of Reading" by Josh Quittner gives us something to think about in regards to the reading habits of the digital generation and the effect of the e-book on reading print sources. Quittner notes that his 12 year old daughter, who grew up as a part of the digital generation, tries to read print magazines like an online resource by "tagging" items with post-its!
Quittner focuses on the introduction of the Apple ipad, the newest hand held touch device to hit the market, and one that promises to revolutionize the way people browse the web, stay in touch with friends, and read e-books and online magazines. What do you think? Will the ipad and other e- book readers lead us away from print sources soon? How should we as librarians respond to the new reading habits of the younger generation?
